Lhasa


Lhasa, the capital of China's Tibet Autonomous Region, has a history of more than 1,300 years. It is the political, economic, cultural and transport center of the region. Lhasa covers an area of close to 30,000 square km. It has a downtown of 544 square km and a population of 400,000; 140,000 of its people live in the downtown area. Lhasa is home to the Tibetan, Han, and Hui peoples, as well as many other ethnic groups, but the Tibetan ethnic group makes up 87 percent of the total population. Lhasa has beautiful scenery. The Lhasa River, known as the "merry blue waves," runs through the snow-covered peaks and gullies of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains, extending 315 km. The river empties into the Yarlung Zangbo River at Quxu, forming a scenic wonder that features blue and white water waves.

Potala Palace Lhasa means “sacred land” in Tibetan, and Potala Palace, the architectural wonder in the center of Lhasa, is the symbol of that sacred land. When the thirty-third King of Tibet, Soongtsan Gampo, was married in 641 to Princess Wen Cheng of the Tang Dynasty, he had 999 houses built on Hongshan Hill for his bride, as well as the red building at the top of the hill. The Buddhists later named it Potala Palace, meaning the sacred land of Buddhism.

Yamdroyumtso Lake One of major landmarks in Tibet. located in Nhagartse County a rout to Gyantse,50 km far from Tsedang Yumtso. It means dark blue lake looking like jasper. There are many kinds of fish there, hence enjoying the reputation of the Storage of Fish in Tibet and also there are great quantity of birds such as wild duck, goose etc. It is one of four holy lakes and one of famous grassland in Tibet.

Rongbu Monastery 40km away from Mt. Everest, it has become the headquarter of northside climbing and is known as the best place to view Mt. Everest. It is also the highest monastery in the world.

Barkhor Street Lhasa's pilgrimage circuit and a quadrangle of streets surrounding the Jokhang Monastery .In the past, it was only a circumambulation circuit, “a saint road ” in the eyes of Tibetan. Now it’s also a shopping center with nation characteristics. All around the circuit are shops stalls, teahouses and hawkers. There is a wide variety of items to gladden a Tibetan heart- prayer flags, block prints of the holy scriptures, earrings, Tibetan boots, Nepalese biscuits, puffed rice, yak butter and incense.

Jokhang Temple also called the Tsuklakang, is the center of Lhasa and the spiritual heart of Tibet. Everyday pilgrims from every corner of Tibet trek a long distance to the temple. Some of them even progress prostrate by body length to the threshold of the temple. It lies at the center of the old Lhasa. Built in 647 by Songtsen Gampoo and his two foreign wives, it has a history of more tham 1,300. The temple keeps many invaluable cultural relics. The most famous and valuable one is the Jowo Sakyamuni aged 12, which is circumambulated by thousands of pilgrims day and night.Every year, the Great prayer Festival will be held in the Temple. The rites of Dalai Lamas and Panchen Lamas' initiation into lamahood are also held in the monastery.

Norbulingka Park Norbulingka means "Treasure Park", was first built in the 1740s.It covers an area of 40 hectares as a summer palace for several Dalai Lamas where they handled political affairs and practiced religious activities. In the past, each spring a grand procession of lamas would follow the Dalai Lama to move into the park and until 1959 common people can have access to the palace. The whole park consists of three main palaces that house a total of 370 rooms. It has the finest trees in Lhasa and its light-hearted air makes it less demanding than most sights in the city.

Sera Monastery It is one of the three largest monasteries in Tibet, located at the foothills of Tatipu,3 kilometers northest of Lhasa.Sera, in Tibetan, means "Wild Rose Garden" since lush wild rose woods once grew around it. It was completed in 1419 by Jamchen Chojey to house the Buddhist treasures. It houses three colleges such as Sera Me, the novice school; Sera Je ,which originally taught wandering monks;and Ngagpa,the tantric college. It is famous for its murals maintaining in perfect, original condition,the statues of Maitreya, Bodhisattvas, and Arhats, scriptures written in gold powder, scroll paintings, a tapestry portrait of Jamchen Chojey, and thangkas .

Drepung Monastery Situated at the foot of the Mountain Gambo Utse, 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from the western suburb of Lhasa, the Drepung Monastery is known as the most important monastery of Gelugpa in Tibetan Buddhism. It is considered one of the 'Three Great Monasteries' (the other two are the Ganden Monastery and the Sera Monastery . Covering an area of 250,000 square meters (299,007 square yards), it held 7,700 monks in total and possessed 141 fazendas and 540 pastures in its heyday, and is the largest-scale monastery among the ones of the same kind. Seen from afar, its grand, white construction gives the monastery the appearance of a heap of rice. As such, it was given the name 'Drepung Monastery' which, in the Tibetan language, means Monastery of Collecting-Rice.
