Guilin


Located in the northeastern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, between latitude 248 and 251 north and longitude 1095 and 1100east, it covers an area of 4195 square kilometers and has a population of 1.2 million.
Guilin is a historical and cultural city as well as a tourist wonderland of world fame. It literally means "cassia tree forest", named for the local cassia trees, whose scent wafts through the city in autumn.
"Guilin boasts the most beautiful scenery under Heaven" is a saying popular among its admirers. There are green hills and fields, forests of peculiar pinnacles and the beautiful Li River winding through the city. From Guilin to Yangshuo, the river travels 83 kilometers with both shores decorated with "numerous green hills popped up out of the ground," a poetic and picturesque environment in which one cannot but feel relaxed and refreshed.

Elephant Trunk Hill The landmark of Guilin, the shape of the hill is just like a huge elephant drinking water from the river with its trunk, so it is called Elephant Trunk Hill.

Li River Cruises The boat trip downstream along the Li River between Guilin and Yangshuo is a very relaxing cruise. Due to Karst formation, there are deep pools, dangerous shoals, murmuring springs, and roaring waterfalls along the Li River which famous as verdant mountains, fragrant waters, mysterious grottoes, and exquisite rocks. Hanyu vividly described the enchanting beauty of the Lijiang River in his poem: The River looks like a blue silk ribbon, and the mountains resemble emerald hairpins." Today the scenery along the Li River becomes one of China's top tourist destinations.

Reed Flute Cave A cave is found in the middle of Guangming Mountain in the northwestern suburbs of Guilin. Legend has it that the reed growing by the cave's mouth could be made into flutes, thus the Cave's name "Reed Flute Cave." There are more than 70 insc riptions written in ink on the wall inside the cave dating back to A.D.792 during the Tang Dynasty. The horse hoof-shaped cave has many stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, stone curtains and stone flowers in numerous forms. The cave is called an "Art Palace of Great Nature."

Seven Star Park Seven Star Park is on the eastern side of the Li-River in the Guilin city. The park takes its name from its seven peaks which are resemble the pattern of the Big Dipper constellation. The Seven-Star Cave one of the most beautiful caves in Guilin, is located deep in Putuo Hill, one of the seven peaks. The one million-year-old cave was originally a section of a underground river. The three characters of "Xi Xia Cave" were carved on stone at the cave's mouth in A.D.509 during the Sui Dynasty. For hundreds of years local people believed the cave was the residence of immortals. Other sightseeing spots include Camel Hill, Dragon Hermitage Cave, Stone Stele, Flower Bridge, etc.

Folded Brocade HillTowering over Lijiang's west bank , Folded Brocade Hill lies in the northern part of Guilin city . The name is derived from its queer-looking rocks which are broken horizontally . Folded Brocade consists of Yueshan Hill , Look-on-All-Direction Hill , Crane Peak and Bright Moon Peak. The Wind Cave runs from north to south halfway up the hill , with a cool breeze blows inside it in all seasons . It features 90 Buddha images of the Tang and Song dynasties , as well as dozens of ancient stone carvings. After passing through the Wind Cave , you come to the Face-the -Cloud Pavilion , Over-the-River Pavilion , and finally the summit of Bright moon Peak , where Catch-the -Cloud Pavilion commands a splendid view of tourist attraction was already famous back in the Tang Dynasty, or some 1,000 years ago.

Longji Terraced Field The Longji terraced fields is a fascinating scenic spot for tourist. Being one of the 12 top class scenic spots in Guangxi Province, the fields has a history of 600 years, which were first constracted in yuan dynasty and completed in early qing dynasty. These fields are result of hundreds of years wise management and hard work. The shinning terraces lace the mountain slopes like silver ribbons in spring. And summer breezes ripple the surface of the paddies in great waves. In fall layers of yellow crops make golden pagodas, and in winter hosts white snow dragons are said to make the terraces their home. The fields have combined magnificence and elegance, and form some of the finest scenery in China.

Guihai Stele Forest Guihai Stele Forest is set to the south of the Crescent Hill where about 218 stone carvings and inscriptions are well preserved. Most of these carving works were from Tang and Song Dynasties which have been of great importance in Chinese calligraphy culture.
